Storing large furniture such as couches and sofas on end helps to save on space.

Avoid placing sharp or heavy objects on top of upholstered furniture.

Wipe any items made of metal; bikes, metal tables, tools, etc, with machine oil or WD-40 to prevent rusting.

A safe and easy way to help prevent mice from getting in your storage unit is to place dryer sheets throughout the unit.

Placing pallets or boards underneath your items in your storage unit allows airflow and avoids condensation build-up.

Place frequently used items near the door.

Shovels, hoes, rakes and hoses can be stored together in empty trash cans. Stack extra cans inside each other.

Dishes and glasses should be wrapped in paper and packed in sturdy boxes.

Liquids, explosives, flammable liquids, toxic materials and perishables should never be stored in any storage unit.

Keep refrigerator and freezer doors slightly ajar and clean before storing. Use the space inside for storing other kitchen items.

When storing delicate heirlooms, use sturdy constructed boxes, such as wardrobe boxes.

Wrap mirrors and pictures with paper pads or use mirror boxes. Never store flat.

It’s best to hang clothing whenever possible.

Use wardrobe boxes when possible.

These come with a clothes rod for easy hanging.

Moving Tips

Assign one drawer of a dresser for sheets and towels so that you won't have to rummage through boxes for these essentials the first night in your new home.

After you've cleaned and dried the inside of your refrigerator, put a handful of fresh coffee, baking soda or charcoal in a sock or stocking and place it inside to keep the interior smelling fresh during the move.

Pack heavy items in small boxes and lighter items in larger boxes.

Remove bulbs before packing your lamps or any other items that may have a light bulb.

If it's irreplaceable, take it with you in your vehicle. If you decide to pack framed photos or art, place sheets or blankets between them for added protection.

Plates and record albums should be packed on end vertically, rather than placed and stacked for the transporation process.

Toilet paper, telephone, toiletries, snacks, coffee, coffee pot, soap, flashlights, screwdrivers, pliers, can opener, paper plates, cups, utensils, a couple of pans, paper towels and cleaning supplies are some of the immediately needed items upon arrival at your new home. Pack a box with these types of items to have easy access.
